How To Eat Healthy While Traveling

Samantha Neier, Integrative Nutrition graduate, knows a thing or two about traveling. Not only does she travel to see clients of her Health Coaching business, Faith In Food, her job in sales at Nike also takes her all over the country for meetings and product presentations. Luckily, her Integrative Nutrition education has allowed her to stay healthy on the road. Samantha wrote the following essay with suggestions on how to eat healthy while traveling for a newsletter that recently went out to her co-workers.

Eating Away From Home

There’s no denying that everyone, at one time or another, gets hungry on the road. Who hasn’t had a snack attack, while traveling? When we are removed from our home environment, unable to prepare our own meals, eating nutritious, satisfying food, can be a challenge. As we begin to travel more in the summer, it is not common to find ourselves reaching for fast foods that are highly processed and nutrient poor.

Many convenient airport food chains offer foods that are highly processed and full of chemicals, additives, damaging fats and refined sugars. When traveling, try to plan ahead and pack small meals and snack foods in your handbag or carry-on luggage that are filling and enjoyable, but also nutritious. Here are some suggestions.

  • For a crunchy texture pack raw carrots, Terra chips, or homemade popcorn.
  • To fulfill a sweet sensation try fresh fruit, dates stuffed with almond butter, or organic dark chocolate.
  • Get after a hankering for salt with mixed nuts or salted edamame.

If packing is not an option, look for healthy food kiosks in the airport. Do some pre-work and investigate what terminal you are departing from or where you have a layover. Airport websites provide readily available information on dining and retail shops in their terminals. Some examples are listed below.

  • Pick up a sushi roll in Terminal E of Atlanta’s International Airport, at One Flew South.
  • Grab a Nicoise Salad in Terminal 5, at New York City JFK’s La Vie.
  • Try breakfast from the yogurt bar at Tortas Frontera at Chicago O’hare Airport in Terminal 1.
  • Indulge in cured olives and marcona almonds at Vino Volo in Seattle’s Central Terminal Marketplace.

When you upgrade the quality of food and snacks you eat, you give yourself a greater sense of satisfaction, and you will be giving yourself a much needed boost to get through a long day of travel.

Eating is enjoyable and there is a wide variety of healthful goodies for whatever you’re craving, be it sweet, crunchy, salty, creamy or spicy. Dive in, be creative and enjoy your snack!
