Do you ever find yourself reaching for a chocolate chip cookie mid-afternoon or a glass of wine when you get home from work? We all have cravings for certain foods from time to time, but what is the underlining cause of these cravings? Usually, when you want a piece of chocolate or a salty snack, it doesn’t mean that your body needs that food, but instead it is missing something else. The best way to eliminate cravings completely, is to figure out the underlying cause so you can feed your body what it is really hungry for!

Lack of water

Often when you are thirsty, your body registers the feeling as hunger instead of thirst. Make sure you are drinking enough water through out the day, and drink a glass of water when you feel a craving coming on.

Primary Food deficiency

This is a big one. A common reason that we crave sweet or comforting foods, which could lead to binge eating, is because we are missing something else in our lives. Maybe you are unhappy in your job or looking for a more meaningful relationship with someone. If you find that cravings are consistent, it’s a good idea to evaluate your primary food to find the root cause.

Eating too much of one food

If your diet is high in salty foods, you are probably craving sweet, or if you eat a lot of cold, raw foods you might be craving warmer foods. It’s important to listen to your body to find a balance of different foods with a variety of flavors.

Seasonal cravings

Seasonal eating is one good reason to give in to your cravings! As we transition into warmer weather, our body starts to crave lighter, cooler foods instead of the warm, comforting foods that you were probably craving in the cooler months.

Lack of nutrients

If your diet is lacking in a certain vitamin or mineral, you might start to crave foods that have high levels of that particular nutrient. In addition, if you are deficient in something like protein, you might have sugar cravings as your body searches for a quick energy source.

If you find that you have strong cravings for a particular food, take a look at all of the areas of your life. Are you unhappy with your career? Are you eating too much salty or too much sweet food? Or it could be that your diet is not balanced? Once you figure out what is really causing your cravings then you’ll be able to wipe them out for good!
