Healthy, shiny, gorgeous hair—it’s on everyone’s wish list. Many of us go through tons of products (and money!) in order to tame frizz, get rid of dandruff, lock in shine, boost volume, and so much more. The thing is, many of these shampoos, conditioners, and other hair products are full sulfates, sulfites and other questionable ingredients. These chemicals can not only cause your hair to be dry and brittle, but they can also be absorbed into your scalp.

The great news is that there are natural ingredients that we can use to heal and restore our scalp and hair. Many of these all-natural ingredients that are healthy and effective for your hair are the same healthy ingredients that can be found in your fridge and kitchen pantry.

Here are some simple and natural tips for healthy hair:

Give your scalp a massage: Keeping your scalp healthy is key to getting those gorgeous tresses you’ve been dreaming about. By simply massaging your scalp for 5 minutes with any natural oil before showering, you’ll help moisturize your scalp and increase circulation, which in turn helps hair follicles become more receptive to oxygen and nutrients. Try using an essential oil like lavender, or if you’re more sensitive, olive oil works well, too.

Get rid of flakes: Dandruff is one of those pesky problems that can be embarrassing if left untreated. The good thing is that we have two natural solutions that will help fix the problem. To treat a flaky scalp, rinse hair with apple cider vinegar. Apply at the scalp and work your way through the ends. Experts also recommend massaging tea tree oil into the scalp before washing your hair. Tea tree oil has anti-fungal properties that can help get rid of flakes, treat dryness and itchiness, as well as help protect your scalp.

Keep your hair moisturized: Frizz and dry ends are a result of thirsty hair. A super inexpensive and highly effective way to moisturize your hair is to deep condition with natural oils. Mix warm rosemary oil and jojoba and work through hair. Wrap hair in a warm towel and leave in for 45 minutes. Coconut oil and olive oil are also great solutions for dry ends—just apply a small amount to the ends of your hair, wet or dry.

Revive lifeless hair: Weighed down, lifeless hair is often cause by product build up. A lemon rinse will help remove build up and breathe life into your hair. Simply massage lemon juice into damp hair and scalp. Leave in for 5-10 minutes. Rinse out.

Healthy styling: It’s best to use minimal products when styling your hair to avoid future build up. If you want to achieve beachy waves with minimal products, try this DIY spray: blend ½ cup of water, 1 tsp of coconut oil, and 1-2 tbsp sea salt in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray onto dry or wet hair. Then, scrunch and twirl with fingers for fabulous waves.

Eat nutritious foods: Believe it or not, your diet has a major impact on your hair. Add more foods rich in biotin and vitamins A and E into your meals for strong, healthy hair. Dark leafy greens, nuts, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and cayenne, (spicy foods have also been shown to promote hair growth!) are a great source of these vitamins and minerals.
