6 Signs that You May Be Sensitive To Gluten
Going gluten-free is more than just a trendy diet. Many people have sensitivities to gluten, or even allergies that make digesting wheat almost impossible. For them, cutting it from their diet is essential to staying healthy and feeling their best.
Unlike Celiac disease, which is a serious digestive disease that damages the walls of the small intestine when gluten is eaten, gluten sensitivity is not life threatening, however in extreme cases it can lead to the development of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. In most cases, people with a gluten sensitivity experience discomfort such as gas, bloating, and diarrhea. The problem is, other food sensitivities can have the same side effects, so it can be difficult to know that gluten is the source of your digestive troubles. If you think you might have a gluten sensitivity, there are several external symptoms that could point you in the right direction. If you suspect you may have a gluten sensitivity, keep an eye out for these signs:
Skin Rash: Ever wonder what those little red dots on the back of your upper arms are? It’s a condition known as keratosis pilarsis, and it can be the result of a Vitamin A deficiency. When your body can’t absorb gluten, it often can’t absorb nutrients like Vitamin A.
Migraines: A migraine headache can be associated with any number of health problems, but if you are experiencing digestive problems along with the migraines it could be a side effect of a gluten sensitivity.
Acne: The face is like a road map to internal health. When you are breaking out, specifically around your jaw line, it could be a sign that your digestive health is off as a result of a gluten intolerance.
Other food sensitivities: Do you have a stomachache after every meal, even if you didn’t eat gluten? When you body is struggling to digest a food to which you have a sensitivity, the balance of healthy bacteria and unhealthy bacteria in your gut is thrown off. Eventually, your gut is in such bad shape it starts to lose the ability to digest other foods, especially lactose.
Brain fog and chronic fatigue: If you’re living a healthy lifestyle and getting enough sleep but still feel tired all day, it could mean that your body is putting a lot of effort into trying to digest gluten when it can’t.
Overly emotional or severe PMS: If you are feeling emotional, experiencing many moods swings, or have worse than normal PMS it could also be a sign of a gluten sensitivity.
Of course, most of these symptoms could be the result of something else that is going on with your body. However, if you are experiencing more than one of them in conjunction with gas, bloating, and diarrhea, then it might be worth cutting gluten completely out of your diet to see if the symptoms go away.
