Sexercise: Working Your Core Could Bring You To Orgasm

Building core strength is important, but who knew it could be so sexy? A recent study has shown that women who do extended abdominal exercises may be able to really, really enjoy their core workouts.

According to a study helmed by author and researcher Dr. Debby Herbenick, the curiosity known as the “coregasm” is legit. Along with her team, Herbenick, who acts as the co-director of Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion, surveyed 370 women to gather information about this titillating phenomenon.

These women varied significantly in age range (18-63) and averaged out at 30 years old; most were in a relationship or married, but only about 70% identified as heterosexual.

While the study’s participants experienced pleasure during a variety of athletic exercises—think weight lifting, bike riding, and rope climbing—nearly half of the women credited their workout-related climax to moves targeting their abdominal muscles. Among others, vertical knee lifts were strongly associated with having an orgasm.

Herbenick found that women were most likely to climax after numerous, high-intensity sets of the exercise. But why? In a Men’s Health article, author and sex therapist Joy Davidson hypothesized that coregasms are more likely felt by “women who already have very strong pelvic muscles … and when they’re doing certain exercises that are tapping into the deep core or into the quads and inner thighs, what they wind up doing is almost automatically squeezing pelvic muscles…” When combined with pre-existing muscle strength, this squeezing, explained Davidson, resulted in climax.

While groundbreaking sex researcher Alfred Kinsey discussed the coregasm in the early 1950s, little has been known about its causes or connections until recently. This is all the more reason why Herbenick’s research is so revelatory, and may create a connection between exercise and sexual therapies for non-orgasmic women.

Who knew you could improve your physical and sexual health at the same time? Go ahead. Hit the gym. We won’t tell.
